Hakaniemi Market Square

Having been in operation since 1897, Hakaniemi Market Square features traditional market square delicacies and atmosphere: seasonal vegetables, berries and herbs. Many locals like to start their day with morning coffee and porridge in a market square tent. The Market Square temporarily hosts a glass hall that serves as temporary premises for Hakaniemi Market Hall.

Helsinki Market Square

Helsinki Market Square is the city’s most international and well-known market square. In addition to traditional market square delicacies, vendors at Helsinki Market Square sell goods such as handcrafts, souvenirs and a wide variety of market square food. The market square features two major tourist attractions: the Keisarinnankivi monument from 1835 and the iconic Havis Amanda fountain from 1908. The market square also serves as the departure point for ferries to the Helsinki archipelago.

Helsinki Market Square always hosts the traditional Helsinki Baltic Herring Market, one of Finland’s oldest public events, in the first week of October.

Manta Square

Manta Square is located between Esplanade Park and Helsinki Market Square. The square is adorned with sculptor Ville Vallgren's sculpture Havis Amanda, more commonly known as Manta. In addition to the nude female figure, the fountain complex includes four sea lions around the edge of the basin and fish spouting water from the central pedestal. The sculpture was unveiled in 1908.

On May Day, the statue is the center of student celebrations, when it is washed and polished. The work belongs to the Helsinki Art Museum collection. The statue and pedestal were renovated in 2023–2024.

Other information

In the mid-20th century, the square surrounding the Havis Amanda statue was known as the bustling Flower Market. Today, the square is for example home to cafés during summer time.

Hietalahti Market Square

Hietalahti Market Square, or Hietsu in short, is famous particularly for its legendary flea market. The Market Square has been hosting flea market operations in the summertime for several decades, and in recent summers, Hietalahti Market Square has also served as the location of a joint terrace run by the restaurateurs of Hietalahti Market Hall.

Töölö Market Square

Located by Runeberginkatu in Taka-Töölö, Töölö Market Square is a traditional trading post that has been enlivened in recent years with events and summer terrace operations. In daytime, the Market Square features traditional vegetable and delicacy stalls, as well as a classic market square café.

Haaga Market Square

Located in Etelä-Haaga, Haaga Market Square is a summertime location with features such as a traditional market square café, a vegetable stall, flea markets on Saturdays and various events. Vendors sell handcrafts such as wool socks and interior decoration items.
There is often a food truck at the Market Square as well.
